About program
Are you passionate about creating a healthy world? Learn how disease affects human biology and how to design, develop and formulate drugs that prevent or treat diseases. Pharmaceutical sciences are the foundation of new drug design, development and delivery. Students in the Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences program learn to apply the scientific method to address gaps in knowledge while also learning about governmental regulations of the drug development process, chemical-biological interactions of current drugs, the discovery of new drugs, and the techniques and tools in use by the pharmaceutical sciences industry. From discovering new therapies to testing and manufacturing new medications, this degree acts as a powerful springboard to careers in pharmacy, medicine, biotechnology, drug development and regulatory affairs.
The BSPS academic content is highly collaborative. Excluding College of Pharmacy courses and general education courses, the curriculum includes courses from nine departments in five colleges.
Taking advantage of the collaborative relationships that our faculty maintain with pharmaceutical/biotech companies, drug regulatory agencies, and the broader research community, the BSPS program also offers interested students an internship in the summer of their junior year. Alternatively, students can participate in directed research locally and/or complete a mentored capstone project at the UA.
College leadership anticipates that BSPS graduates will be well suited for government regulatory/policy careers; pharmaceutical industry positions in research, regulatory affairs, quality control or sales and marketing; employment with health insurance companies or providing expertise regarding drugs and medications to non-profit organizations. The BSPS curriculum will provide unique knowledge, skills and experience with which students can become highly competitive applicants for post-baccalaureate education in graduate programs or in professional curricula, including pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, optometry, veterinary medicine, occupational therapy, physical therapy, public health, nursing and law.
